A long time ago, San Teodoro was called Offolle, or maybe Ovoddè, and at least up to1348, it was linked to Olbia by a Pisan road winding in the shadow of the Castle of Pedres. Its present name reminds us of the martyr Teodoro, a victim of Diocletian's persecutions, who is recorded in the peaceful parish church, surrounded by stone houses that stand close together and are adorned with geraniums.
The industrious little centre of San Teodoro could not but be noticed by sea lovers and those who enjoy spending their holidays in the midst of nature who have elected this area as their summer residence.
San Teodoro stands between the little plain of Calcinosu and the surrounding hills, and is dominated by the Magghioni promontory – a splendid granite massif 1.000 miles high which was unfortunately deforested at the end of 800 by the Tuscan wood cutters.
The numerous ponds make this place unmistakable, immersed in the Sardinian countryside where a long time ago, hunters armed with obsidian darts, which were discovered in plenty in the area, had already found a rich hunting place.
Once the Carthaginians were defeated, the area came under Roman supremacy, as the remnants of amphora and coins testify, and was used as a harbour.
The fall of the Roman Empire, the Vandals' and the Byzantines' arrival marked an era of serious crisis and depopulation that would not come to an end.
Today, many people visit San Teodoro, in one of the most beautiful areas of Sardinia: close to Olbia, the Gulf of Aranci, the splendid Tavolara: a real heaven for the lovers of nature. The perfect climatic conditions allow every sea sport. The costs of limestone rocks contain beautiful pure white beaches, lapped by a sea of rare beauty and impressive landscapes, like the Cinta, Su Impostu, Coda Cavallo, Brandinchi - from where Garibaldi, who had escaped from Caprera, moved towards Rome to free it on the 17th of October 1867 - , and finally Cala Gilgolu with its transparent waters.
But that's not all.
The surrounding countryside, with the omnipresent sea which perfumes the whole area, is a source of great attraction for trekkers who will find an oasis of peace and solitude in a nature that has remained intact through the centuries.
Hotels, campings, sports facilities including a golf course, will satisfy all kinds of demands.
Even San Teodoro's cooks make their tasty typical dishes which will « season » your stay: do not miss the Zuppa Cuata, the Chiusoni, Cajatine – all made with the delicious local cheeses. The choise of deserts is equally rich with the Niuleddi and the unique Aranzadas, fragrant of honey and oranges.
